Year 12 A and B – APFCC’s Eating Disorders

Your task is to use this powerpoint presentation to complete the APFCC stencils at the back of your workbook:  APFCC’s Abnormality

Next I want you to click on this link:

and complete the bem sex-role inventory for yourself to see what your gender identity is like – make a note of how masculine or feminine you are.

Next spend some time learning the studies and considering which model of abnormality they fir in with:

  • Biological (Medical)
  • Psychodynamic (Freud)
  • Behavioural (Learning)
  • Cognitive (Thought patterns)

We will have a whiteboard test next lesson so you need to know the stuff.

Remember your essay is due first lesson next week

Sorry folks, I am in school but have to go and observe another lesson. I would like you to use the powerpoint (click on this link) Defining Eating Disorders to complete the first two pages in your workbook about eating disorders. Then on my desk in the classroom are some case studies. Read the case studies and pick out the key symptoms in each. Think about why they may have become Anorexic or Bulimic. You can write on the sheets.

I am also not in school on Friday afternoon so I want you to complete the two APFCCs at the back of the book using this powerpoint – APFCC’s Abnormality (click on the link). When you have done that click on this link

to have a go at the Bem sex role inventory and see if you are more masculine or more feminine. I will pre-register you in school so if you want to go home early and work on your own PC that is ok with me. Miss Duffin will be in Q1 if you need her.

Sorry I am not in folks. We are going to start our new topic of debates next week so to get you started do an internet search on Nature vs Nurture, Free Will and Determinism and Reductionism. You need to produce a 50 word summary of what each debate is about. See you next lesson.

Hi folks, sorry I am not in – I have the dreaded stomach bug that is going around.

We are going to start our new topic which covers Schizophrenia, Depression and Anxiety Disorders. So your first task is to research the symptoms/clinical characteristics of Schizophrenia. Produce a mind map of these, look for how common it is, which type of people are most likely to get it and how old most sufferers are when they are first diagnosed. Once you have done this you could start to look at theories about the causes. Remember to check more than one web site and think about the validity of the information – who is producing it what is their agenda- to make sure that you get accurate information.

Things to revise for Year 12 Mock – Abnormality

You need to be able to describe each way of defining abnormality:

  • Statistical Infrequency
  • Deviation from Social Norms
  • Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
  • Failure to Function Adeq1uately

You then need to be able to make two criticisms of each of these definitions.

Think State, Explain, Example for the descriptions and criticisms. You need to know the names of the definitions as you may not be given them!

You also need to be able to describe the biological and psychodynamic explanations of the causes of abnormality. Each has a number of assumptions Eg biological includes:

  • Genes
  • Biochemistry
  • Neuroanatomy
  • Infection.

Two assumptions for each explanation should be sufficient – state explain example is the formula again. Then you could be asked to evaluate or give criticisms of each explanation. You should be able to use reductionist, determinist, individual differences and nature or nurture for each one. You need to be able to explain why they apply and give an example.
