I’ve answered some questions from the work book on memory, please could you mark them…
Q: Explain what is meant by the terms encoding, capacity and duration (2+2+2 marks)
Encoding is the transfer of information into code, and it creates a memory trace. It is acoustic encoding in STM and semantic in LTM. Capacity is how many pieces of information like words, numbers or letters that can be held in the memory (in STM it is between 5 and 9, and in LTM it is unlimited). Duration is how long a memory lasts for. In STM this is between 18 and 30 seconds and in LTM it is unlimited. Well done this would get 6 marks!
Q: Explain the term multi-store model
The multi-store model (Atkinson and Shiffrin, 1968) says there are 3 memory stores. Firstly the sensory store, and if here data is given attention it enters the STM. Maintenance rehearsal keeps it in the STM. It is transferred to the LTM through elaborate rehearsal, where it can then be retrieved. Without rehearsal the data is lost, although the more rehearsal something gets then the stronger its memory trace will be. Also 6 marks!!
Q: Explain what is meant by the term levels of processing
The levels of processing model (Craik and Lockhart, 1972) says that rehearsal alone is not enough to transfer data from the STM to the LTM. It suggests that it is the depth of processing which determines whether information is stored over long periods. There is the shallow level, concerned with superficial features. The phonemic level is to do with how things sound. Deep processing where the meaning of something is considered. Memory is thought to be a by-product of this processing. I would give this 4. YOu need to explain more about what the levels of processing mean for the accuracy of the memory, eg that shallow processing will lead to very inaccurate recall.
Thank you!

Thank you, and I’ve rewritten the answer to the thrid question…
The levels of processing model (Craik and Lockhart, 1972) says that rehearsal alone is not enough to transfer data from the STM to the LTM. It suggests that it is the depth of processing which determines whether information is stored over long periods. There is the shallow level, concerned with superficial features, and this leads to the most inaccurate recall. The phonemic level causes more reliable recall, as it is centered on how something sounds. In deep processing the meaning of something is considered, and this leads to the strongest memory trace and so the most reliable memory. Better! Would get 6 now, well done!
